Farming in the Shadow of Cities

The first priority identified in the Farms Forever discussion paper by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is to, “Help preserve the productive capacity of agricultural land close to major urban centres.” The presenters in this session will each identify specific barriers to the goal of preserving peri-urban Foodland, and collaborative strategies that could be employed, or which have already been successfully employed to do just that. The session will deal with strengthening food systems, not simply stewardship, delineating the threats to food production in close proximity to the largest markets, and thus link the issues of farmland preservation with the broader concerns of food sovereignty and security.
